Apr 18th 2012

FitFlop HQ is packed to the rafters with talent. This month, we’ve trained our lens on the not-so-camera shy Helen to find out what gets right up her tripod.

My official job title is… Photography Production Manager

Which means… wherever an image is needed, I’m accountable. I organise shoots, the making of campaigns, blog images, videos…

So I’m glad… I studied art history, photography and painting in New Zealand.

I got this job by… starting off as Marcia’s PA, apparently being uber-competent and willing to do anything she threw at me (my flexible, enthusiastic attitude was appreciated) and seizing the day, dammit.

In a typical working day… I track Marketing, Art and New Product Development projects to ensure they have all the visuals they’re going to need. I research potential locations, ensure legal releases are signed, get permits, carnets, still life props, clothing, search for stylists, models, clothing, makeup! (At 9am, I might be looking at the typical daily stretch of sunlight in November in Turkey vs Tel Aviv; at 3pm it’s likely I’m on a conference call figuring out how to optimise the effect of a black shadow under a pair of shoes.)

I love my job because… on average, I coordinate around 50 people when transforming an idea into an ad campaign. It can be crazy but we’re always laughing. And then there are the free ‘fantastic Mr Fox’ shoes… but I’ll save that for another time.

What gets me through the day is… my some-say mildly obsessive-compulsive ‘to-do’ list, a good camera, safety pins, double-sided sticky tape and my FitFlop footwear. I’m not even sucking up saying that. I’m sure I walk faster than everybody else.

My hero shoe for this season is… our new UnoTM ballet pump no contest. I’ve been waiting for it. It’s so easy to style – I love the all-black one worn with rolled-up black skinnies and a simple white T – for classic summer cool.

When I’m in London, my favourite spots are… South Molton Street for shopping; Borough Market for the most enormous chocolate brownies; and Fulham Railway Bridge Footpath – I take a photo from the same spot almost every morning and it’s always different.

One Day Without Shoes

Mar 13th 2012

Making a difference for millions of children around

the world could be easy as taking off your shoes

On Tuesday, April 10, TOMS will ask the world to go without shoes for is annual One Day Without Shoes event. This is the day each year that TOMS raises awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s life. Last year, people went without shoes at over 1,000 events in over 25 countries around the globe!!

Millions of children around the world live without proper footwear, exposing them to injury and disease every day. TOMS was founded on the premise that with every pair of shoes someone purchases, a pair of new shoes will be given to a child in need. One for One™. The idea of One Day Without Shoes came about as a way to call attention to the need for shoes around the world and the issues surrounding that need.

TOMS’ founder and chief shoe giver Blake Mycoskie said, “This movement is about raising awareness and asking people to do something – anything – without shoes. We are so eager to see the world’s participation this year. So, do what you normally do – just without shoes and help start the conversation.”

So, will you join us in spreading awareness? Just take off your shoes on April 10th!

AND send us your photos!

Most inspired barefoot photo will win you a free pair of TOMS!
